Stratford-Upon-Avon

I spent about 10 minutes looking through famous Shakespeare quotes to try and come up with a good title for this post, and couldn't decide on one.  So here we are.

We rented a car this weekend to visit the temple Friday afternoon, so Saturday morning we took a carload up to Stratford-Upon-Avon to visit William Shakespeare's city!

Our first stop was at the childhood cottage of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's wife (not the modern actress). It was a beautiful morning (but freezing) morning, because the sun was actually shining!

Just 10 minutes down the road driving, you come to William Shakespeare's birthplace (born in 1564), which is literally in the center of the shopping town now.  We stopped off at a little cafe after to enjoy a traditional English breakfast. I thought I would hate eating the English Breakfast, but it has really grown on me: poached eggs, toast, mushrooms, tomatoes, sausage, and bacon (the good british kind).

This is inside Holy Trinity Church, dating from 1210. It lies on the river banks of the River Avon. Shakespeare was baptized here on the 26 April 1564, and the baptismal font is still located in the church. Shakespeare was buried here in the year 1616. His wife, daughter, and two son-in-laws are also buried alongside him in the church.  There is a monument also in the church that was created for William Shakespeare after his death. They say it is a pretty good resemblance of him made by his friends, especially because his wife and daughter were still alive to confirm the likeness.

We also were able to see an original King James version of the bible date 1611!!

One of Joe's favorite things of the day was "The Sanctuary Knocker". Part of catholic history, if someone committed a serious crime and being chased, if they knocked with the sanctuary knocker, they were given 37 days of sanctuary in the church to come up with a plan to escape or settle the disagreement.

Let me be that I am and seek not to alter me.
